- Week Six: Small Bedroom Tips and Tricks
I’ve been decorating our new bedroom addition for this spring’s One Room Challenge. It’s a small room, so I used a lot of creative tips to make the most of the space! Here’s a round-up of the strategies to help you make the most of any space!
- Bring the outdoors in
- Space-saving doors and windows
- Built-in storage
- Space-saving window coverings
- Mounted lights and fixtures
Bring the outdoors in:
When possible, add windows and doors to bring in natural light and allow your eye to move beyond the walls of your small room. You can also the view outside your window as inviting – in this case, although our room looks out on a retaining wall, I planted lush bamboo. I’ve also added plants to the room to blur the division between indoors and out.
Window and door choices:
There is one standard swing door in this room, which was necessitated by the construction. The rest of the doors (or lack thereof!) are chosen to make the most of our small room: no door on the closet (but make it beautiful inside!); a pocket door to the bathroom; and sliding glass doors to the patio outside.
Built-in storage:
In a small space, built-in storage is so important. We didn’t have room for a separate dresser, but I found a dresser that fits perfectly in the closet, and the bed has drawers underneath to hold even more! In the bathroom, I chose a vanity that added storage as well!
Window coverings:
It’s almost always a good tip to bring your curtains up to the ceiling, as this makes the room feel taller. In this case, the curtains are mounted on a track from the ceiling, and they expand across the entire back wall. This strategy minimizes space taken up by hardware and also means there’s less visual “breaks.”
In the bathroom, I used a faux stained glass window film, which adds a more traditional style and takes up no space at all!

Mounted lights and accessories:
In a small room, it helps to use accessories to the ceiling or wall to save on floor space. In our new bedroom, I used a floating wall shelf, a hanging pendant light, and a hanging plant!
We’re in the home stretch now! I just need to make some bedding for the faux bamboo IKEA hack daybed and tidy up!
