Dining Room Bar and Final Look – Week Eight – Fall 2023 One Room Challenge

I seriously love the One Room Challenge. It’s just the motivation I need to finish off projects, and the community is always really positive. I love finding new accounts to follow for inspiration and encouragement! In the spring, I decorated our entryway, and this fall, I took on our dining room. I’ve linked the previous projects above. This week, I am showing how I created definition in our open-concept space by adding a shelving unit between the kitchen and dining room. The shelf helps block some of the visual clutter from the kitchen. The kitchen side provides extra open shelves for storage and display, while the dining room side is a pretty bar.

I built the room divider on top of the peninsula between our kitchen and dining room using an existing bookcase we had. This saved a lot of construction work, and it also allowed me to reuse this piece that I love but didn’t have another place for. To adapt the bookcase to it’s new use, I:

  • removed the top panel
  • cut the bookcase to fit the height and added fixed brackets under the lowest shelf to give back stability
  • trimmed out the top and bottom
  • applied grasscloth peel-and-stick wallpaper inside of shelves facing the kitchen
  • Decorated the back side to create a home bar area in the dining room

Here are some pictures of the trim details:

I love this Society Social grasscloth wallpaper. It is very easy to use and looks real, with a matte finish and slight texture. For other applications, I have used this NuWallpaper faux grasscloth paper. I love the look – it’s much more like a patterned contact paper, with no texture. Both are great for different applications. I used the Society Social grasscloth wallpaper in multiple places through this space, to create some connection. It is on the inside of the DIY built-in desk, the Thomasville bar cabinet, as well as both sides of this new kitchen divider!

I thought about a few different ways to hang things on the back of the bookcase, such as adding a picture rail to the top. Finally, I decided to add this decorative knob I had picked up years ago at Anthropologie. It looks perfect in this spot and allows me to easily change the art and mirrors here.

I’m so glad I finished this room, and I am looking forward to sharing Thanksgiving with friends here next week!
